Elemental Rings

The way I see it. By Kalindore Percival Alvin Enselari

Dear journal, I feel we are headed for a difficult time ahead…. Let me list the facts of the situation, as I see it…

1. The Eastern Rings were made first.
2. The Western Rings were made to copy or simulate the Eastern rings.
3. There are summoning stones with Eastern Glyphs matching the rings spread throughout a Western town.
4. The creatures brought forth by the summoning stones are permanent.
5. ALL 5 of the stones have been activated.
6. We felt an earthquake hit the town as soon as the 5 stones were activated.
7. Lines of magic power manifested as soon as the stones were activated (possibly linking them).
8. The summoned creatures reflect the alignment of their summoner.

I believe the above to be true, then I will guess the following:

1. The stones and (eastern) rings were meant to work together.
2. Once activated all five rings act as a much larger, ancient summoning stone.
3. Because, the stones summon permanent creatures, that are strong in their own right, the 5 combined must be more powerful.
4. The creature summoned by all 5 must be immensely powerful, stronger, permanent.
5. Because the stones are ancient, the creature summoned by all 5 must be ancient as well (on the scale of a dragon possibly).
6. The Ancient summoned creature from all 5, might be related to eastern culture, mythology.

Additionally I have the following issues with the haflings;

1.Cappleton has no faith in myself or my fellow elf (Querin) (i.e. I come up with a plan that helps us and he then attributes that idea to Zog.
2.Barky doesn’t deserve to wield the rings, because he is more than willing to place an entire town in danger by summoning random chaotic monsters.
3.I am worried that the party is consistently and rapidly moving up the city’s most wanted list. For example – burning the bar several days ago, starting another part of the city on fire via the magma man today, associating with chaotic beasts.

I believe we are planning to check out the center of the area the 5 stones form, some think a pentagram, hopefully I will be able to report more later.

Regards,

A storyline enhancement…. The 3 Evils

There is a stone, on a lightly forested floor, recently uncovered. It is 18 inches in diameter, dull white, almost tan in color. There is a eastern glyph etched in the surface of the stone, the glyph is black in color.

All is clam and quiet in the woods when three figures suddenly appear just feet away from the stone. They appear ready to spring into action at the slightest sign. One slender figure clad in all black cloth moves quickly to the perimeter, nearly disappearing in the shadows cast by the sparse trees. The other two remain in defensive stances; they are both eastern human males. Both in robes, one set of well made silk, one set of a sturdier cloth. The man in silk appears unarmed though his presence emanates that he is anything but unarmed. The other appears much bulkier, as if armored under the robes, and equipped with a staff in hand and a flanged mace at his side.

The slender black clad figure returns and with a quick sign to the others, all noticeable relax. The figure removes the cloth coverings from face and head to reveal an eastern female, the same seen talking to Lord Shandar in the scrying session.

“It is the same as the other” says the unarmed easterner.
“Should we activate it or wait to use it” says the other male, looking at the woman.
“Activate it, and this time do not hold back” she say back to the man.
“We could use it as bait or a trap for the halfings and elves” says the slender eastern man.
“No, we have a trap being sprung now, we will gain information from that, right now we need to gain information about this” says the woman pointing at the stone.
“I will not summon a debiru this time, without the fool Shandar to take the blame we do not want to risk angering our potential future allies.” Says the easterner with the staff.
“Agreed. We do not need to waste our energy dealing with an unbound debiru. Summoning one in such a matter away from the city will gain us nothing” states the silk clad man.
“Yes something more neutral. Something that will be angered by not being able to return itself. That will cause problems for whoever else comes to investigate this stone.” Says the easterner with the staff.
“No one else knows about the stones….” starts the slender eastern man.
“Don’t be a fool! Do not underestimate our enemies. Shandar did. They have proved to elusive and chaotic to characterize at this point.” Says the woman. “Do not underestimate them” she reiterates while looking at the silk clad man. “Now ready yourself” turning to the other man she says “if you have chosen your actions, then begin.”
The armored eastern man reaches down, chants something quietly and touches the stone. The stone responses by somehow becoming slightly brighter, more colorful. He nods to the others. The silk clad man positions himself between the other two, appears to cast a spell and says “I am ready.”
“Don’t hold back this time” the woman says again the armored easterner.
The armored easterner casts a spells while appearing to focus on the stone. The earth in front of the stone erupts or rather expands rapidly into a huge earthen humanoid shape. The creature appears to take in it’s surroundings, pauses then lets out an anguished roar and focuses on the three figures in front of it. The woman smiling slightly, with her hand resting on the silk clad man’s shoulder, increases her grip and the three figures disappear before the earthen creature can react further.

Spying on Lord Shandar

Lord Shandar sits in a room with a large table in front of him, numerous maps spread out on the table. Around the table are four chairs, two of them occupied. The first by Taj (he is the guard that was / is the wererat) now in a commander of the guard uniform. The second by a slight eastern women, dressed in loose fitting black cloth, which covers her completely from feet and hands up to her neck. There is disdain between the two, more like barely contained hatred.

A slender person (you presume a man) dressed like the seated woman just bowed to him Lord Shandar, with a slight gesture from the woman he gives his report. The report details every members of the group’s movement and also includes the mage shop, the remaining good guards and their leader, the elven clerics, the 2 other good churches/temples in the city and their leaders.

There is silence for a moment then the woman asks, “Has more than one confirmed the halfings have Kurai Ka?” The man who gave the report nods. There is a sound of swift walking and a door slamming.

“The halfings are more trouble then you indicated” the woman says to Shandar.

Lord Shandar appears to be mastering his anger, then glances at Taj.

“They will be dealt with immediately, my Lord. They are children, fools who stumbled upon powerful items” Taj says. The women coldly looks at him “how with you deal with them?” she asks.

“Your informant says that are split up, they are nothing without that elven warrior, without him they lack direction and will be easily destroyed” Taj says.

“This is your last chance to deal with them” Lord Shandar says while staring at Taj.

The haflings tonight, then the remaining guards the next!” Taj says. He stands and bows and leaves.
“If he fails, you will have command of the guards” Lord Shandar says to the woman, who nods.

The woman and others outside the area of viewing leave. After the door shuts Shandar slams his fist on the table, the western water ring clearly visible on the his hand.

From recovering the Western Earth Ring to Finding the Fire Wu-Jen

After the lost of the Set1 Earth Ring the PCs tracked it to a ‘hideout’ near the graveyard. They realized the house was occupied by a bunch of thieves and mercenaries and the Set1 Earth Ring was in the basement. Using Zoq’s Dimension Door they got the Frank and Cappleton to the basement first and surprised the head thief. They got the rest of the PCs into the basement while Frank and Cappleton continued fighting. The PCs then successfully defeated the thief and several of his mercenaries and recovered the Set1 Earth Ring.

Note, during the battle in the basement Barky had his ‘familiar’ “strafing the windows on the second floor”. This was in the early afternoon, on a relatively busy road.

The PCs were in their temporary hideout – the half sunken boat. It started to sink the rest of the way. The PCs abandon ship. Frank is attacked by a shark, the PCs trap the shark in a stone dome (stone wall shaped that way). The PCs do not know why the ship moved from being half sunk to fully sunk, where the shark came from or why Loveric had to make a saving throw for Cappleton.

After this event the PCs return to the sewers (the old hangout) thru the blown up sewer entrance they blocked up. They unblocked the entrance to get access, which was a good thing since for city, because the blockage had allowed the sewage to build up (there was maybe 1 or 2 more days before this was a real problem for the city) but a bad thing for the PCs because they got covered. After some discussions of building/establishing an under ground base or safehouse in the sewers somewhere, the PCs start looking for clues.

Also at this time Zoq discovers a holy area in the town – the original townhall, now a local museum with a small park area in front of it. Zoq located the holy area after the Quentin found out that Lord S… (who has Set#1 Water Ring) is the head or high up in he evil church of XXXX, which is now emerging in the city.

The PCs (minus Zoq) run into some orcs. But orcs with a twist, they are all wearing exploding armor. When the armor is struck with an edged weapon, it has a good percentage chance of exploding. Killing the orcs and damaging whoever hit the orc and those nearby. The explosion also has chance of triggering other exploding armor. If the armor is hit with fire damage the explosion seems automatic. Blunt weapons can make the armor explode, but the chances seem small.

After Cappleton questioned one of the dead orcs, the PCs went off looking for the Fire Wu-Jen with the Set#2 Fire ring (Zoq also rejoined the PCs at this time).

The PCs found a passage that lead to the area where the Fire Wu-Jen was. Got past some guards (exploding armored orcs), a (not) concealed door, and some more orcs. Found a room where some mining had taken place, then found another room with some mining activity. This is where an ambush was set up by the Fire Wu-Jen and the exploding-armor orcs. With the use of their own rings the PCs kept the orcs from swarming them and were able to defeat them. The Fire Wu-Jen was not seen and the PCs know a bunch of orcs got away (or were restrained from entering from entering the room).
